Contribution to PEI Publication Infrastructure Risk Management : Managing PV assets in Italy
By Gintare Sertvytyte, Pierluigi Sagarriga Visconti and Max Lensvelt, Platina Partners
Platina Partners is an independent European investment firm that has been investing in and managing renewable energy infrastructure since 2002. Its current operational portfolio includes wind and solar power plants across ten countries, primarily in Europe. Platina Partners first entered the Italian solar market in 2010 and now manages a portfolio of about 45MW of photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants, acquired in 2011-12. Recent regulatory changes in Italy have posed great challenges for the country’s PV sector and have had a strong negative impact on the valuation of Platina’s Italian PV portfolio. However, these somewhat exceptional circumstances also provide an interesting showcase for the value of proactive asset management, which is particularly important when the assets in question are stressed by external developments. For the purposes of this case study, Platina’s 15MW project ‘Solaron’, which began operation in 2011, is frequently referenced throughout.
